Using arts and storytelling

as a tool for social change

Yilmaz Vurucu and Bahanur Nasya spent summer of 2023 in Newcastle, where they conducted artistic research on the industrial heritage of Newcastle. They visited local organizations, conversed with artists and gathered local knowledge on the industrial heritage and history of Newcastle and the river Tyne.  Two of the videos created were screened to the public during Wonderland’s Circular Economy event on Saturday November 11, 2024, taking place in Vienna.

Interview with Michele Allen, Artist

Michele’s practice saw her Mud Mapping the shores of the Tyne River in Newcastle. In this interview, Michele speaks about place, nature and how we relate to our environment.

She assigns agency to the river and mudflats, claiming it changes the topography and our relationship to it, as it accumulates over time.
Her art investigates relations of (and with) the river and how its historical transformation reflects the industrial heritage of Newcastle.

The story of Star and Shadow Cinema

In this video, we interview Dawn Felicia Knox of Star and Shadow Cinema as she explains the working class industrial history of Newcastle and its impact on cultural ecosystems.

She walks us through the impressive Star and Shadow Cinema building, and provides a historical overview of how this volunteer run creative space was established,
and is managed collectively as a non-hierarchical, egalitarian, inclusive organization.

The videos were created during Yilmaz Vurucu & Bahanur Nasya’s Secondment as part of the Consider Project as guest researchers at Newcastle University, from Eutropian GmbH.
