Art and nature walks - reloaded
Following our experience during the “art and nature walks” Erasmus+ Youth Exchange project in November of 2025, where we hosted 30 young participants from five European countries (Austria, Turkey, Poland, Bulgaria, and North Macedonia) — we wanted to take the opportunity to replicate our experience and walking routes with new participants.
So we put out a call, and were ecstatic to see there was quite the demand. We invited local NGOs and artists to inform them about the project and it’s accomplishments, alongside the participants who had signed up. People from all age groups were welcome, and we ended up with a diverse group, excited and ready to walk and explore.
Together with biologist Florian Etl from Wienerbiodiversitätskorridor, Danny Nedkova and Yilmaz Vurucu led a walk that lasted 3 hours.
We began our excursion along the Danube Island – where we observed the local flora and fauna, caught some insects (we released them unharmed!), smelled some flowers, listened to some birds and tracked beaver activities.
Participants were asked to observe, gather anythign they might find inspirational, and take part in seeing.
We were lucky to have Florian with us, who informed us of the details regarding the biodiversity in the area.
We then gathered and read the story of Turtle Island as narrated by Robin Wall Kimmerer.
We made our way to the Floridsdorfer Wasserpark, looking at the various birds along the way.
At the park, participants had time to observe and “see” nature, looking at it from a different perspective. They shared their impressions and photos with us.
As a final activity, we made our way to the Art and Nature Walks Mural, created by the participants back in November. It serves as an excellent example of how art can be used to raise awareness. Participants were curious, and we discussed the project and it’s impact, and obtained feedback from the locals on how they viewed the mural and the impact it might’ve had with them, as well.
